Nestled in the heart of Raleigh, North Carolina, The Roast Grill is a cherished icon for hot dog enthusiasts and anyone who appreciates authentic, no-frills comfort food. Specializing in classic American hot dogs cooked the old-fashioned way, this humble yet unforgettable eatery delivers a culinary experience deeply rooted in tradition and heartfelt hospitality.
The menu at The Roast Grill is beautifully simple, spotlighting their signature Hot Dog flattopgrill blackened and burned to perfection. Each dog is a masterpiece, dressed with mustard, onions, slaw, and their legendary homemade chili — a flavor-packed concoction that adds a rich, smoky warmth with just the right kick. Priced at just US$1.45, it’s an unbeatable value that tastes like a million bucks. Complement your meal with a classic glass bottle of Coke, Diet Coke, Dr. Pepper, or Sprite for under a dollar, or, if you prefer, select from a range of longneck bottled beers to unwind with.
The sides, though modest, are thoughtfully curated to enhance your experience. Fresh crispy French fries, crunchy potato chips, tangy kraut, and homemade pickles bring ideal balance — whether you prefer to dip them in ketchup, relish, or a touch of mayonnaise. For a perfectly sweet finish, indulge in their Homemade All Butter Poundcake or decadent Greek Baklava bursting with butter and walnuts, priced affordably at just one to two dollars. On chillier days, their hot chocolate and coffee, available during select hours, offer a cozy cap to your meal.
Stepping into The Roast Grill feels like stepping back in time. The ambiance resonates with warmth and nostalgia, complete with a line of stools along the bar and a couple of intimate tables that foster a tight-knit, family-like atmosphere. As one longtime patron recalls from their first visit in 1979, the place has maintained an unwavering commitment to quality — a genuine rarity in today’s fast-paced dining world. The small space gets packed during lunch hours, signaling local love and unwavering popularity. The owners’ hands-on approach — cooking right before your eyes — evokes a sense of genuine care and pride that’s palpable throughout.
Customers repeatedly highlight the exceptional friendliness and welcoming spirit of the team, with many describing the vibe as more “family kitchen” than restaurant. One enthusiastic visitor praises the simple yet perfect combination of toppings, noting “No ketchup on hot dogs, just how we like it,” and even recommends the bold “dog burnt” style for that signature crispy edge that defines The Roast Grill. Another mystery delight is the thoughtful touch of a complimentary pack of Planters peanuts accompanying bottled sodas — a charming nod to that old-school diner hospitality.
It’s important to mention that The Roast Grill keeps a deliberate, limited schedule, primarily operating Tuesday through Saturday with the most consistent hours on Fridays and Saturdays. This exclusivity only adds to its charm and makes every visit feel like a special occasion worth marking on your calendar.
For anyone craving an authentic slice of Southern hot dog history with intensely flavorful, handcrafted eats you won’t soon forget, The Roast Grill stands out as a true Raleigh treasure. Here, the food speaks with smoky, bold character, the atmosphere embraces you like family, and the experience becomes more than a meal — it’s a heartfelt tradition served with every perfectly charred bite.

A relic of a bygone time in the best way possible. Patrons of note snipped all over the back wall, the old-fashioned hot dogs cooked right in front of you by the owner and chef. It felt like a mom and pop cooking for the family. "Warm and friendly" doesn't do it justice. Buddy of mine ordered a bottle of coke and it came with a complimentary pack of Planters peanuts, and all meals are ended with a small, free Tootsie Roll. They take care of you here. You get a sense of community, even if it's your first time. I ordered two all-the-way hot dogs (mustard, onions, slaw, and chili), and it was the best ten bucks I'd ever spent. Perfectly classic. They also serve brats, homemade pound cake, and homemade baklava. Those are on the agenda for next time, for sure!
This place is amazing. I'm in town once a year and have been trying to come here for the past 3, but kept missing their open hours. Finally made it this year and it did not disappoint. You want hot dogs? They got em. Bring cash. The definition of no frills. Great service and atmosphere, friendly staff and owners. So glad I was able to stop in.
My first experience at the Roast Grill was back in 1979 when Mrs. Charles ran the Grill, and been going ever since. And the quality of their hotdogs is as great as ever, too. There’s a line of stools along the bar and 2 tables for 2. It can be packed during lunch hour, and I try to be there when George and Kathy Poniros open at 11:30 Tuesday through Saturday. The regulars are like family, and welcome everyone that comes in. Roast Grill only serves hotdogs (no ketchup!), no fries. And homemade baklava or pound cake for dessert. Been in business since 1940 and still open, using the same grill from that first day. There are other good hotdog places around, but The Roast Grill will burn them to order the way you like them.
One of the best mom n pop places I’ve been to! Great folks! Excellent Weiners! No fuss no kiss kinda place. Loved it!
Updated review since they were open and we came by on our last day. Definitely recommend stopping by to support them. Good food and service. Simple menu and no ketchup on hot dogs. Just how we like it! Would recommend getting the dog burnt! The only con is the open days. They said that the most consistent days were Friday and Saturday. If you come by the other days it's hit or miss if they'll be open. That's the only reason for taking off a star.
For the last few years every time I pass through Raleigh I have tried to stop and get a hotdog after seeing the restaurant on Man Vs Food, unfortunately they are always closed when I get there. Maybe next trip I'll get lucky. .
Old school hole in the wall. Hot dog joint as it should be Hot dogs were perfect! Ly burnt with mustard slaw, chili and onions Had to get the homemade baklava and a Coke and a glass bottle to get the full experience Was treated with a Tootsie roll In the end Forgot to mention how great the chili flavor was. Was worried that the slaw was not going to be that good but it complimented the dog perfectly Cash only A warning to you ketchup lovers. There's no ketchup on site Do not. And I mean do not miss an opportunity to get a hot dog here you can. Thank me later
